Hair Care Tips - Prevent From Having Damaged Hair

  1. Avoid shampoos and other hair products with harsh sulfates that may strip your hair, causing dryness and breakage.
  2. The best shampoo to use on African American hair is protein; your hair is made of protein and protein shampoos are compatible with hair. Protein shampoos prevents your hair from further damage, instead it repairs the hair.
  3. Use wide teeth combs for detangling your hair.
  4. Avoid the ingredient (propylene glycol) it will break down the proteins and the cellular structure of your hair.
  5. Use natural hair products: such as shea butter, tea tree oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, carrot oil, coconut oil, etc.
  6. Avoid sodium lauryl sulfate it will cause hair to be dry and damaged it will also irritate your scalp.
  7. Drink 4 - 7 eight ounce bottles of water daily.
  8. Stay in the sunshine for 15 minutes daily, for faster hair growth. The sunshine contains vitamin D which helps with having healthier hair, skin, and fingernails.
  9. Another great shampoo to use is herbal; the herbal shampoos assist "black peoples' hair" to retain its moisture; and it also helps the hair to grow due to the natural herbal ingredients. With herbal shampoos you can shampoo your hair more often; at least 1-2 times a week.
  10. Avoid products with alcohol; Black people hair already suffers from dryness and dehydration. Alcohol products and chemical perms dry the hair out even more.
  11. For natural hairstyles; kinky hair twist, braids, locks, braid outs, tree braids, or afros. Use spray water bottle mixed with tea tree oil or olive oil for moisture; apply to your scalp twice or three times a week.

More Hair Care Tips

9. Use one bottle of Biotin vitamins once a year as directed on the bottle, for faster healthy hair growth. Only use Biotin vitamins for short hair, balding edges, and damaged hair.

10. Massage your scalp with your fingertips when adding essential oils to increase blood circulation. This makes your hair grow healthier and faster, it wakes up the hair follicles.

11. Avoid excessive heat from hairdryers, flat irons, and pressing combs; Hair straightening styles can be wore occasionally for special events, etc. Stay away from stressful situations and subjects.

12. Laugh every chance you get, watch comedies, and obtain a joke book. Laughter is the best medication.

13. Trim damaged split ends for better hairstyles and growth, trim/clip ends every 4-6 months.

14. If you wear ponytails from time to time, avoid wearing the cloth made scrunchies. Wear the silk or polyester made scrunchies.

15. African American's hair tends to be dryer than other races of people hair. Always use conditioning-shampoos when shampooing your hair. Then use a deep conditioner such as Cholesterol conditioner. After that use a little leave-in conditioning-moisturizer spray sheen (Sta-Sof-Fro) or Liv Hair Conditioning Cream, this cream is really great for natural hairstyles. Liv Hair Cream is one of the best Black hair products that actually prevent dry hair, and damaged hair. These two conditioning-moisturizers are awesome for maintaining beautiful natural hairstyles; best believe.

16. Avoid using hot water to wash your hair; using warm water keeps your hair fuller and healthier. Hot water will strip the hair and make it brittle.

17. The more you leave your hair alone it will grow.

18. Avoid products that contain petroleum, because it will eventually clog your pores.

19. Avoid using hair gels, they have glue as an ingredient. But you can use Edge/Temple Control Hair Balm (Organic Root Stimulator).

♥♥ Wearing a chemical perm is purposely damaging your hair! The same ingredients of perms are in Liquid Drano (unclogs metal pipe solution). ♥♥

Benefits of going Natural

  1. Self-love and appreciation
  2. Rockin your natural hair keeps moisture longer and perms don't.
  3. Less split ends with natural hair, more split ends with permed hair.
  4. No more dry and itchy scalp with your natural hair, perms keep scalps dry, itchy, and irritated.
  5. Natural hair doesn't cause scabs or alopecia, but perms cause scabs, soars, burns, and alopecia.
  6. It's inspirational; more black people are going natural than ever in these recent years.
  7. Be happy to be nappy, if we are not, then who has the power over our hair appearances and decisions?
  8. Potential to having longer fuller hair than with perms. What is good hair to you? Good hair is healthy hair. Everyone wants healthy hair/good hair, it’s a journey that we have to accomplish and maintain; A beautiful journey.

@ Ann, thanks for your comment. I have my hair in twist now and I haven't had a perm since July 2010.

Brinafr3sh, this is a real cool hub. It is quite useful and very informative. Also, this post really did appeal to me because I am into taking real good care of my hair -- even though I wear it short nowadays.

Girl your HUBS are coming out like a GUSHER! And they're really good too! I like referring them. Not just because HUB's policy provides financial incentives for referrals. I'd tell others about them anyway. They're great HUBs! Useful, funny, beautiful, awesome and vote-worthy. Keep on keeping on!

I've been waiting to find my sisters on Hubpages. I recently cut my dreads after 11 yrs (had to, didn't want to). Now I'm in a quandry of what to do w/ it, products & style (don't have $$ for hairdresser regularly). I'll review all your suggestions & products tips. THANKS!

davenstan 2 weeks ago

I am bookmarking this for reference. There is some information on here that is worth looking at again. I am a chemical free gal! I wear the twists often. I try to stay away from heat styles as well.

Grew information
