Volunteering at Senior Centers is an Act of Kindness
73Volunteering at Senior Centers
There's a lot of knowledge that can be obtained from the elderly more than we know. Taking care of senior people is a great way of giving back to the community. Most senior people have taken care of and helped raised their children and grandchildren, when they were able to do so. Let's hope we never forget to give back, and take care of them. Volunteering at Senior Centers is an act of kindness that will benefit both the senior person and the volunteer. Even if the senior person is not your personal family member, he or she is a person with a need for social attention. And to acknowledge senior people is one of the kindest things to do. Seniors golden days should be some of their best days here on earth. Some people visit the senior centers to entertain the senior with; music, singing, storing, etc. Others may volunteer at senior centers to just give a helping hand, like serving food, setting up senior Birthday Parties, helping the senior people with hygiene, communicating with the senior people, etc. Any act of kindness is a great way to connect to the elderly in some way, as a companion and friend. When communicating with the elderly person, ask them if they have any positive gifts or talents they can share with you.
Volunteering could include: bringing arts and crafts, bringing flowers plants, balloons, personal items they may need as gifts, or a small radio; whatever the senior center staff would let the volunteer bring in.
Many senior people living in any type of nursing homes have family members that visit them often. But it's always good to have a volunteer as well, to visit more than one senior throughout the day. Performing an act of kindness such as this is an unselfish act.

Act of Kindness
Just visiting senior centers to say hello and remembering a few names of the elderly, and developing a relationship is a great way to interact. Taking an elderly person outdoors to enjoy bird watching, flowers, the sky, the simple things in life; is a cool way to interact with them as well. Another idea is to exchange gifts and talents with the senior people. For instance, you may play a guitar for a room full of the senior people and their staff members. That is something anyone would enjoy, having someone come into where they live and share their talents or gifts. Furthermore, sometimes volunteering can eventually lead to employment. Volunteering as an act of kindness can help build character, and social skills.
Activities to do with senior people as an act of kindness;
- Learn crocheting together.
- Play Checkers.
- Walk together through the senior facility.
- Exercise together.
- Make beaded bracelets.
- Play the Memory Cards game.
Finally, take the time out, to get the requirements from the senior center staff members, about volunteering/visiting a facility in your local areas. And remember, you can add "volunteering" to your Resume'.

Thank you for this message of love and tolerance. I am a nurse and I worked in a nursing home, therefore I know the conditions of some elderly people and I also know that they can teach us many thing, for example the patience and the acceptance.
I very like this Hub.
